Diesel exhaust fluid. Bad DEF, a bad quality sensor, or a frozen tank will derate a truck that runs fine otherwise.

The clock is a wall clock
49 CFR 395.3 gives a property-carrying driver an 11-hour driving limit inside a 14-hour on-duty window, after 10 consecutive hours off, against a 70-hour ceiling over 8 days. The 14 is the one that matters on the shoulder: it is consecutive hours, not driving hours. A driver who breaks down at hour six and waits four hours for someone to call him back is at hour ten with the truck still broken. When the window closes he is done for the day whether or not the truck is fixed. That is why the first shop that picks up gets the call — not persuasion, arithmetic.
Brakes, tires, lights, and none of them wait for morning
CVSA ran 56,178 inspections over 72 hours in May 2025 and put 18.1% of vehicles out of service. Brake-related violations were 41.1% of out-of-service vehicle violations; tires were 21.4%; lights 12.8%. Hours of service was the top driver violation at 32.4%. A truck placed out of service is not driving to your shop. Somebody has to answer the phone and go to it.

You cannot hire your way out of the night shift
BLS projects diesel technician employment growing 2% through 2034 against roughly 26,500 openings a year, most of them replacements. The occupation is barely growing while a large share of it retires out. The techs you can find should be on trucks, not on a headset at 2am — and a truck at 2am is where the margin is, with truckload operating margins under 1% and every line item climbing.

The comparison isn't you versus a machine. It's a machine versus your voicemail while you're under a truck with an impact gun running. It answers, gets the mile marker and direction, the unit and engine, the codes, the load status, and who's paying, then reaches your on-call tech.
Correct, and it doesn't try. It writes the codes and symptoms down accurately and gets them to you so you decide whether to roll and what to bring. The diagnosis was never the phone's job.

Yes, verbatim. Which lamps are lit and what color, any SPN and FMI the driver or the dispatcher can read off the display or pull from telematics, whether the truck derated, and whether it's still drivable. It writes down what it hears and reads it back. It does not tell the driver what the code means — that is your tech's call, and a phone diagnosis is how a truck rolls with the wrong part on it.
Yes, and it asks before the truck rolls rather than after the repair. Fleet PO and the name and number of whoever authorizes it, or the breakdown network and the case number, or that the driver is putting it on a card. If there's a not-to-exceed, it records that too. What it will not do is authorize work against a fleet account nobody has verified. It hands you the details and you make the credit call.
It asks whether the truck is loaded or bobtail, whether it's a reefer, whether the reefer is still running and holding temperature, whether the load is hazmat, and whether there's a hard delivery appointment. A temperature-sensitive load on a failing reefer is a cargo-claim clock running alongside the driver's hours-of-service clock, and that combination goes to your on-call tech immediately rather than onto a list.
Different call, different questions. A dispatcher usually has the unit number, the VIN, the engine, codes already pulled from telematics, and PO authority — so the intake gets shorter and goes straight to the equipment, the location, and the authorization. A driver on the shoulder often knows the unit number and what the dash is showing and nothing else, so it works with what he has and asks his dispatcher's number. A breakdown network gets asked for its case number and reference. It branches on who answered the first question.
No. It reads back the call-out fee and shop rate you've set and stops there. And a related honesty note: there is no credible public average for a mobile heavy-truck service call. Every figure in circulation — the $1,800 one especially — traces back to companies selling roadside plans, with no methodology, sample, or year attached. We wrote about it. We're not going to put it on this page.
Callers choose English or Spanish at the greeting. We're not going to hand you a statistic to justify it, because the one people quote doesn't hold up: the roughly one-in-four figure comes from American Community Survey microdata, covers the broad Census category "driver/sales workers and truck drivers" rather than heavy-truck drivers, and identifying as Hispanic or Latino is not the same thing as preferring Spanish. We don't have a clean number. We offer the choice anyway, because a driver stranded at 3am has no better option than the shop that can talk to him.
